What is Moving
Magnet cartridges?

Favored by music
lovers over the world

Ortofon has been at the forefront of designing and manufacturing "Magnetic Stereophonic phonograph pickups" since 1969, introducing the VMS system in 1969 and the Moving Magnet system in 1979.

While renowned for its Moving Coil cartridges, Ortofon's Moving Magnet system, introduced in 1979, has proven to be an exceptional addition to their lineup. By offering an economic alternative without compromising on quality, the Moving Magnet system has garnered acclaim among music lovers and audiophiles worldwide. Its introduction marked a significant milestone, expanding Ortofon's range to cater to a broader audience, providing a versatile and high-performance option for those seeking audio excellence.

Moving Magnet cartridges

Principle
of operation

In a Moving Magnet (MM) cartridge, a small magnet is mounted on the cantilever and positioned between a set of fixed coils. As the stylus traces the grooves of the record, the cantilever - and thus the magnet - moves accordingly. These movements cause variations in the magnetic field near the coils, which in turn induce an electrical current. This generated signal is then sent to the phono stage for amplification.

The advantages of
a Moving Magnet

MM cartridges offer key benefits that make them a favorite among vinyl enthusiasts. They deliver higher output, placing less demand on the phono stage, and their simple, robust construction makes them reliable and widely compatible.

One of their standout features is the replaceable stylus, offering both convenience and long-term value.

Strong signal.
Big sound.

One of the key advantages of moving magnet cartridges is their high output. Moving Magnet cartridges generate a stronger electrical signal compared to other cartridge types, such as moving coil (MC) cartridges.

This high output makes Moving Magnet cartridges well-suited for use with a wide range of phono preamps and amplifiers, ensuring compatibility and optimal performance.

Easy upgrade
and replacement

A major advantage of Moving Magnet cartridges is the ability to easily replace the stylus when it wears out or is accidentally damaged - no tools or technical expertise required. Simply slide out the old stylus assembly and insert a new one. This user-friendly design simplifies maintenance and helps protect your vinyl collection by ensuring consistent tracking and sound quality.

With the Ortofon 2M and Concorde Music Series, upgrading is just as easy. As your listening experience evolves, you can move up through the range - from Red to Blue, Bronze, or Black - using the same cartridge body. It’s a system designed to grow with you, making high-performance analog playback more accessible than ever.

A versatile choice

Another advantage of Moving Magnet cartridges is their broad compatibility with different turntables, tonearms, and phono preamps.

Their high output and standardized electrical characteristics make Moving Magnet cartridges a versatile choice that can be easily integrated into various audio setups. This compatibility ensures that Moving Magnet cartridges can be used with a wide range of equipment, providing flexibility and convenience for audio enthusiasts.
